WEA Awards 2017

On Thursday 2 November the WEA Awards were held at the offices of KPMG, Mayfair, London.

The awards are a celebration of WEA learning and values with regional and national awards for students, tutors, volunteers, partners and staff.

We are pleased to announce that Nusrat Hathiari our Area Education Manager for Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland won the WEA East Midlands Regional Award 2017 for her work providing educational opportunities for adults facing disadvantage, especially those with learning disabilities and mental health conditions.

Also our ESOL tutor Carole Clohesy won the Olive Cordell Skills for Life Tutor.  Carole teaches at the Salma Centre to women who really want to improve their lives and that of their families.  She has large groups with several individuals having traumatic back stories and has put in many extra hours at her own expense to support them.

Well done to Nusrat and Carole,  well deserved.

Retirement after 37 years with the WEA

Mick Dickman has been locking up the 101 Hinckley Road Centre for the last 37 years.  Without fail, whatever the weather Mick has come out each evening to lock the building up.  He has also been our maintenance chap for the past 4 years and he has turned his hand to painting, building cupboards etc.

On Tuesday 31 October Mick and his wife Beryl came into the office for a small celebration for his retirement.

The scrumptious cakes were baked by WEA employee Jan Meredith.

Relaunch of Leicester Vaughan College

On Friday 27 October 2017, the relaunch of Leicester Vaughan College took place at the Leicester Adult Education College on Belvoir Street in Leicester.

The relaunch was opened by Kerry Gray of Leicester Adult Education College who welcomed everyone and introduced Jonathan Ashworth MP, Councillor Susan Waddington, Miriam Gill and Lucy Faire from Leicester Vaughan College.

In the main picture, Jonathan Ashworth MP is the first person to sign up to the Leicester Vaughan College membership, which is £1.

Student Achievement Awards

On Tuesday 24 October, we held a presentation for our IT students who had achieved examination success in their Clait levels 1 and 2 and Text and Word levels 1 and 2 qualifications.  All students were taught by Alka Champaneri.

The certificates were presented by our Education Co-ordinator Deborah Walsh.

Two new courses: Movement and Dance

Want to up your exercise levels and have fun at the same time? Why not start dancing?

WEA in association with Serendipity are offering dance class to people 45 and over.

The classes will focus on posture which will help with all aspects of everyday life: self-confidence, body strength, balance, and general wellbeing.

Each class is based on a wide repertoire of gentle exercises which will keep you moving and improve flexibility, coordination, stamina and core strength.

New Course: Archaeology – Treasures of the Midlands

You may have heard of Tutankhamun’s tomb and Pompeii, but did you know there have been some amazing discoveries made right on your doorstep? From the coins of the Hallaton Hoard to the Saxon gold of the Staffordshire Hoard and a medieval boar badge that moved a battlefield, this course will introduce you to some of these great local finds. Everyone welcome; no previous knowledge assumed.
