WEA Awards 2017

On Thursday 2 November the WEA Awards were held at the offices of KPMG, Mayfair, London.

The awards are a celebration of WEA learning and values with regional and national awards for students, tutors, volunteers, partners and staff.

We are pleased to announce that Nusrat Hathiari our Area Education Manager for Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland won the WEA East Midlands Regional Award 2017 for her work providing educational opportunities for adults facing disadvantage, especially those with learning disabilities and mental health conditions.

Also our ESOL tutor Carole Clohesy won the Olive Cordell Skills for Life Tutor.  Carole teaches at the Salma Centre to women who really want to improve their lives and that of their families.  She has large groups with several individuals having traumatic back stories and has put in many extra hours at her own expense to support them.

Well done to Nusrat and Carole,  well deserved.

Retirement after 37 years with the WEA

Mick Dickman has been locking up the 101 Hinckley Road Centre for the last 37 years.  Without fail, whatever the weather Mick has come out each evening to lock the building up.  He has also been our maintenance chap for the past 4 years and he has turned his hand to painting, building cupboards etc.

On Tuesday 31 October Mick and his wife Beryl came into the office for a small celebration for his retirement.

The scrumptious cakes were baked by WEA employee Jan Meredith.
