The WEA 101 was represented by Philippa Tydeman, Administrator at the Shama Women’s’ Centre AGM on Monday 31 October 2016. There was a fabulous display by our WEA sewing and knitting students lead by our experienced sewing tutor Tasneem Ali. Students also received achievement certificates.

T0 mark Black History Month in October, the WEA is partnering with Serendipity Arts to run a series of four discussions, which will start with a keynote speaker. The four sessions are:

BLACK AND GOLD – SPORT AND THE OLYMPICS

The first session will explore the role and politics of Black sports people and athletes in Britain and internationally. Is Black success due to the fact of a level playing field?

Leicester organiser Karen Chouhan will deliver a thought provoking presentation on why the Olympics raise every equality issue you could ever think of!

BLACK HEARTS, BLACK MINDS

The second session examines social and political differences in health and well-being will be discussed with some key health professionals. Why, how and what can be done?

Ivan Browne, Public Health lead at Leicester City Council will discuss some startling differences between ethnic groups in mental and physical health.

HOODIES, HIJABS AND ANORAKS

This session will discuss dress as a marker of identity and controversy. Are we really so shallow as to discriminate on the bases of what people wear?

Karen Chouhan presenting again – for those attending please wear some wild and wonderful clothes!

WAITING IN THE WINGS – BRINGING BLACK DANCE TO CENTRE STAGE

The final session will examine the untold stories of Black Dance in the UK and internationally, and the need to document the African Caribbean dance practitioners and aesthetics, support and platform their work.

Pawlet Brookes, Director of Serendipity will speak on this subject from her many years of experience and her latest publication on Black Women in Dance.

Student success: A star in ICT

20160614_094024Alka Champaneri, expert WEA tutor for ICT is very pleased with her student’s work and progress this term. Jonathan Fletcher has received Distinctions in all exams taken on the OCR Text and Word Processing course at 101.

Alka says: “He is such a helpful member of the group and has produced an excellent “mailmerge” help guide checklist for the students.  He is also now working on Doc Pres II.   He is a pleasure to teach.”

OCR Text and Word Processing will be offered in the Autumn term 2016, starting on Tuesday 20 September 2016 for 20 weeks. The details are as follows:

Student achievements: New course at Deacon and Hardy

Service users at the WEA partner organisation have been very pleased with the new Art course offered at their premises at Wigston Gardens. Expert WEA tutor Kate Keal, started teaching a group of service users on Fridays in the Summer term of 2016 and the students have produced some beautiful art pieces which are being used to decorate the extended premises in Wigston.

Helen Stainby of D&H says: “Kate has managed to build a very good rapport with our service user in a short space of time. They have completed various complex project and are very proud of their achievements. We look forward to continuing the Art courses with Kate in the Autumn term.

Targeted Disability Provision (TDP) courses are run at 101 and in partnership with other organisations and are for adults with learning disabilities.

Additional Art courses include:

Art and Crafts for everyone, Starting Tuesday 20 September 2016 from 1.15pm – 3.45pm for 8 weeks with Annie Kinchington.

Exploring botanical drawing and painting, Starting Tuesday 20 September 2016 from 10.15am – 12.15pm and 1.00pm – 3.00pm for 10 weeks with Annabel Barratt.

Creative Card Making, Starting Thursday 6th October 2016 from 12.30pm – 2.30pm for 7 weeks with Angela Cutting.
