A number of us are off to The Curve, Leicester this week to see The Pitmen Painters. This is based on a true story of some miners in Northumberland who attended WEA classes and discovered they had hidden artistic skills.
An article in The Times explains how the WEA Ashington group was formed and miners developed their interest in art. Although their original intention had been to study art appreciation, their tutor thought that if the miners drew or painted what they did in their everyday lives, they would develop a greater feeling and insight for what was involved in creating a picture.
An exhibition of the miners’ pictures can be seen in Northumberland: WEA Ashington Group.
