Free tasters sessions at Belgrave Hall and Gardens

We are running some free taster sessions at Belgrave Hall & Gardens, Church Road, Leicester LE4 5PE throughout the summer.

Belgrave at Work and Play, Wednesday 16 May 2018 at 11.00 am – 12.30 pm    with Cynthia Brown

What sort of work did people in Belgrave do in the past – and how did they spend their leisure? This illustrated talk will cover framework knitting in Belgrave village, the growth of the British United and other local businesses, the Belgrave Flower Show, balloon ascents and other entertainments.

The Leicester Navigation through Belgrave, Wednesday 6 June 2018 at            11.00 am – 1.00 pm with Bob Payne

This taster session will begin with a brief account of the origins and history of the Leicester Navigation, set in the context of the development of Leicestershire’s system of navigable rivers and canals. It will then focus on the navigation as it passes through Belgrave, identifying the changes to the nature of the river itself, and the impact of these changes on the neighbourhood.  This account will be supported by maps and documents.

Botanical Painting Wednesday 1 August 2018 11.00 am and – 1.00 pm and 2.00 pm – 4.00 pm (two sessions) with Annabel Barrett

Come along and try your hand at drawing and painting plants and flowers in this beautiful setting.  You will be encouraged to develop your observational, drawing and painting skills, to create a simple botanical composition, in this friendly and relaxed taster session’.

Garden Time, Wednesday 5 September 2.00 pm – 4.00 pm                                       with Sally Cunningham

Walk around Belgrave Hall’s beautiful gardens with plant expert Sally Cunningham and discover where some of your familiar garden plants came from – the answers may surprise you! Find out the real reasons some of our plants were grown in the past. Also, introducing seed saving techniques.

New course: Gonna rise up Singing

This course will teach learners regardless of experience how to use their voices to sing together in a group whilst being aware of their individuality. Methods and practices will centre on safe vocal practices and exercise that support basic rhythm, how our sound is produced and altered (body awareness) and simple harmony singing.

Learn how to make beautiful vintage style accessories, such as tiaras, head dresses, bangles and necklaces.

New course: Family History Workshop

Join in with a friendly group in seeking out your ancestors and building your own family history online.

This ever popular hobby can be a bit daunting at times. This course is for students with some experience of family history, whilst also catering for new starters. New sources and methods will be investigated to enable those with experience to extend and expand their research further and work with others on the journey. New students will be introduced to the basics and enabled to start their search both online and offline. Particular emphasis is placed on historical context. Visits to local archives will be arranged where possible.

New course: ECDL Level One

This is a non-accredited course which is a practical and flexible way of improving your ICT skills using Office 2010. Units covered include word processing, spreadsheets and PowerPoint. A WEA Achievement certificate can be awarded at the end of the course. This course will give you the skills to progress onto the accredited ECDL Level 2 qualification in September.
